The Mid-South’s long-awaited “beaver fever” will have to wait a little longer.
Buc-ee’s has confirmed delays for two planned travel centers in West Memphis and Gallaway that were originally expected to open sometime in 2026.
A spokesperson for the Texas-based chain said the West Memphis location is now projected to open in June 2028, while the Gallaway location is expected to open in August 2027.
The Gallaway Buc-ee’s is planned for a 28-acre site along I-40 at Exit 28 in Fayette County, about 40 minutes northeast of Memphis.
The travel center superstore is known for its clean restrooms, food, and lots of merchandise. This store will be a 74,000 square-foot building with 120 gas pumps and more than 70 restrooms.
It's expected to bring 225 jobs to the area. According to an April social media post from Tennessee State Senator Page Walley, starting wages for Buc-ee’s employees run $17-$19 per hour plus benefits.
Crews broke ground on the new site in Fayette County back in November of 2024.
Buc-ee’s currently operates two locations in Tennessee, both in the eastern part of the state.
In West Memphis, the planned Buc-ee’s Travel Center will span approximately 74,000 square feet on 34 acres, featuring 120 fueling stations along with dining and retail options. The project is expected to create about 225 jobs in the area.
Despite the delays, both projects are still moving forward, with local leaders hopeful the iconic travel centers will deliver long-term economic and tourism benefits once completed.
"Buc-ees has submitted its design plans along with the Interchange Access Justification to ARDOT and the Federal Highway Administration for review," a spokesperson for the City of West Memphis said. "The need for infrastructure improvements was expected and aligns with Buc-ees' earlier projections for a project of this size. Transportation and utility upgrades, including road improvements, are already moving forward and under construction. Their timeline is aligned with these necessary improvements and their planned construction schedule."
ABC24 has reached out to the City of Gallaway for additional information but has not yet received a response.

It'll take even longer for the Buc-ee's in West Memphis. A spokeswoman says that location won't open until June 2028. Buc-ee’s plans to build on the eastbound side of I-40 between Missouri Street and Seventh Street. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) said its crews will widen a street and build a ramp for traffic control.
When the projects were announced last year, officials had said the stores would open in 2026. FOX13 has asked Buc-ee's to explain the reason for the delays, but has not heard back.
Buc-ee’s stores are known for their dozens of gas pumps, myriad food and drink choices, large, clean restrooms and unique merchandise themed with the chain’s iconic beaver mascot. The chain also pays well. In West Memphis the mayor said the store would bring 225 jobs starting at $19 per hour. That’s $40,000 a year. It was enough to convince city leaders to approve a $5 million incentive package, including providing the land at a cost of $3.5 million plus another $1.5 million for infrastructure improvements. Mayor Marco McClendon told FOX13 in 2024 the city will recoup the cost of the land from a 3% sales tax on prepared foods. He said the city will recoup the infrastructure costs from refunds through state gas taxes. He estimated the city will gain $3.1 million annually from taxes.
Ahead of its 2024 groundbreaking, Fayette County loaned Buc-ee’s $15 million to get work started on the Gallaway store. They said it’s expected to pump $12 million a year into the county’s economy.
