COVINGTON, Tenn. - Tens of thousands of students across the Mid-South returned to the classroom Monday after winter break. It was a special return to class for elementary and middle school students in Covington.
In 2023, an EF-3 tornado tore through Covington. Crestview Elementary and Middle Schools were destroyed.
Blake Shankle, Tipton County Schools Board Chair, told FOX13 district leaders had to make crucial decisions. "Had them go home early that day and saved many lives," he said.
Shankle told FOX13 surveying the damage from the tornado was a harrowing experience. "It was surreal," he said.
It began what Shankle described as a somewhat painful journey for the district as they figured out plans to build a new school. For 2 1/2 years, students and teachers were housed in temporary buildings.
"It's not a building, it's a tent," parent Latijah Dean told FOX13.
Shankle told FOX13 the district had to overcome obstacles with insurance, funding and meeting a critical timeline. "Our superintendent did a great job. He took everything on his shoulders and he did a fantastic job to get these teachers and students in this new building," he said.
Dean is thankful her kids are going to back to class in an actual school building.
“I was just telling them that I pray they have a great and wonderful day," said Dean. "I’m excited for the story that I get when they come back.”
Parent Christina Larocca has a son in pre-K at Covington Elementary. "We were nervous! We were so excited that we were talking about it the whole ride here!" Larocca told FOX13. "He’s so excited to not be in, like, a tent and be in a real school."
There are big changes. The two schools have been combined into one big building. A decision Shankle said helped save some money.
"We were able to save some money, we were able to save some space," said Shankle. "This is kind of the newer designs that you're seeing schools, so that was behind the decision making."
The school names have also been changed. It is now Covington Elementary and Middle Schools. Shankle told FOX13 teachers voted to make that change.
"Covington really represents this community. Covington Middle and Covington Elementary, and then it kind of goes in with our high school Covington High School," said Shankle.
On top of the new building and new names, there is another big addition that will benefit the community.
The cafeteria in both schools' doubles as a storm shelter. Combined, it can hold about 2,500 people.
