Kirkwood downs Brighton for program’s first playoff win

Since Kirkwood’s inception two years ago, head coach Chad Watson has put an emphasis on progress and growth. After a first-round playoff loss last year, Friday’s matchup against Brighton offered an opportunity to show that progress.
The weekend rain that plagued many matchups across Middle Tennessee stopped just in time for the 7 p.m. kickoff, leaving sloppy ground and fog. These conditions made it necessary for both teams to take good care of the football.
It didn’t take long to realize Kirkwood had that covered when Jadon Portis secured the opening kickoff and returned it 90 yards down the sideline for a touchdown.
Kirkwood’s 7-0 lead didn’t stay that way for long. Brighton quarterback CayDen Young dropped back and searched downfield on the Cardinals’ first drive.
Josiah Claybrooks then ripped the ball out of Young’s hands and ran 30 yards for a score to put Kirkwood up 14-0 just 29 seconds into the game.
“We told our kids we plan on winning a lot of playoff games here at Kirkwood,” Watson said. “They needed to do everything they could to seize this moment and take advantage.”
Kirkwood built an 8-2 regular season record behind its explosive offense, featuring 2024 Class 6A Mr. Football semifinalist Miles Reding and 2025 Class 5A semifinalist Kamari Blair on the offensive line.
With the Cobras building a two-score lead before the offense took the field, it felt like it would be a long night for the Cardinals from the start.
The defensive intensity Kirkwood played with was unmanageable for Brighton. After a strip-sack touchdown on the previous possession, Claybrooks continued to make plays defensively while being the feature back on offense.
Kirkwood got the ball back in Cardinal territory after a poor punt, but Brighton finally found some rhythm as its defense began to settle in, forcing Hudson Marsh into a 25-yard field goal.
With a 17-point lead halfway through the first quarter, what looked like an inevitable blowout turned more competitive for the rest of the half. Both offenses traded the ball back-and-forth until the closing moments.
The two-minute drill Kirkwood typically runs flawlessly was on display as Reding led his offense into Cardinal territory, capping off the drive with a 4-yard run. Reding’s first touchdown of the night gave Kirkwood a 24-0 lead heading into halftime.
With Kirkwood’s defense playing strong football and a 24-point halftime lead, the anticipation of a playoff win started to feel real, not just for those on the field. Kirkwood Principal Jessica Peppard felt a sense of pride in how far the program has come in just three years.
“We’re really proud of this team and the continual growth,” Peppard said. “They’ve just excelled year after year. We’re really proud of this coaching staff and the grit they’ve shown over the last three years. It’s just going to keep getting better from here.”
With every ensuing stop, the dream started to feel more like reality. Brighton was able to fight off Kirkwood through the third quarter, but the Cobras struck once more in the fourth for good measure.
With 10 minutes left, Reding scored his second touchdown on the ground to push Kirkwood’s lead to 31-0.
Brighton avoided the shutout with a last-minute touchdown pass from Young, but it was too late as Kirkwood closed it out 31-7.
Not only did Watson’s squad secure the first playoff win in school history, but it also earned validation. No high school in Clarksville had won a playoff game since Kirkwood’s inception in August 2023.
With a first-round win, Kirkwood earns the opportunity to play for another week. Despite the highs of a home playoff victory, the Cobras will travel to face reigning four-time Class 5A state runner-up Page.
“We’ll treat it like any other week, just worrying about being the best version of us and playing the cleanest game we can,” Watson said. “We’re going to come up with a game plan that gives our kids a chance to be successful against Page.”
