Movies are returning to Tipton County.
The Atoka 16, a multiplex movie theater located at 79 Atoka-Munford Road, just east of Highway 51, is set to reopen June 13, after "weeks of cleaning, repairing, and hiring all new staff and management," according to the theater's new operators.
"I am extremely confident this community wants to watch movies," said Phil Zacheretti, president and CEO of Phoenix Theatres Entertainment, the Knoxville-based company that now manages the multiplex. "We have heard from so many people who are eager to come back. It's a long drive for them to the theaters in Memphis."
Built largely to serve the Millington and Covington communities, the 16-screen theater was opened under the name "CinePlanet 16" in 2006 by Ambarish Keshani, who at the time also owned several other multiplexes in Memphis and Jackson, Tennessee.
But Keshani in recent years was unable to maintain the 7-acre property. When the theater closed in May, only seven of its 16 screens were functioning. Projection equipment and heating-and-air-conditioning in some auditoriums had failed.
Even the signature lion's-head fountain in the theater lobby was leaking. "We're still scratching our heads figuring out what to do with that," Zacheretti said. "So many people who've come by say it was part of their childhood."
Phoenix — a company that operates a dozen other multiplexes, for a total of 154 screens in 10 states — took over the theater in June. With the Hollywood 20 in Bartlett, the Atoka 16 remains the only other Memphis-area movie house not owned by Malco Theatres Inc.
According to a press release from Phoenix, the theater — open daily — will feature "comfortable electric recliners" in each auditorium and "an extended food menu," made possible by "new kitchen equipment."
Eleven auditoriums will be in operation June 13, with the others expected to be up and running as the summer progresses, Zacheretti said. He said the theater will employ 51 people — all new hires.
Zacheretti said the Atoka will offer numerous specials to entice patrons. All tickets will be $5 all day long on "Bargain Tuesdays." The theater also will offer "a loyalty program, to reward regular customers with free movies and food items based on their purchases," and a reusable "Annual Popcorn Bucket" that can be refilled for $4.99 per visit after an initial purchase of $14.99.
Movies playing at the Atoka 16 when it opens will include the new "How to Train Your Dragon"; the new "Lilo & Stitch"; "Materialists," a romantic comedy with Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans; "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning"; "Karate Kid: Legends" and "Bring Her Back," a horror movie.
Zacheretti said advance sales have been strong, and the community seems excited by the promised improvements, because "they had a poor experience here in recent years."
"Too many theaters have closed in the past few years and left towns without a movie theater," he said. "We are excited to serve first-run films to the greater Atoka area for years to come."
